- Camber’s work has included developing the Greenwood Initiative’s investment strategy, identifying and evaluating potential investment opportunities, and providing advisory and technical support to key grantees, such as the Center for Opportunity and Wealth Data.
The Challenge
In the United States, wealth inequality is growing. Today, America’s top 1% holds 31% of the nation’s wealth ($55T), while the bottom 50% holds only 2.5% ($4T). This gap has also been widening over time – when adjusting for inflation, the top 1%’s wealth has growth roughly 4.5 times larger than it was 30 years ago, far outpacing growth for other economic classes. This divide leaves lower- and middle-income households further behind, limiting their ability to weather financial shocks and build long-term economic stability – and compounding inequities in health, housing, and education. Wealth is critical for sustained economic advancement, yet investments in economic mobility sometimes prioritize boosting income without building and sustaining wealth in parallel.
The Greenwood Initiative, a Bloomberg Philanthropies effort, exists to address this challenge. It works to expand wealth-building and wealth-preservation opportunities for people in the bottom half of the wealth distribution.
Our Approach
Since March 2025, Camber has partnered with Bloomberg Philanthropies to support the Greenwood Initiative and its grantees in advancing economic opportunity and wealth mobility, serving as both a strategic partner and subject matter expert in economic mobility.
Camber worked with the Greenwood Initiative to assess its strategic positioning and focus areas within the wealth mobility space, conducting a robust field scan to understand existing efforts and identify potential opportunities for philanthropic investment. Building on that analysis, Camber worked with the Greenwood Initiative’s leadership to craft a strategic frame and architecture for its portfolio of work – one that both tells a clear story of impact and guides future investment areas.
The Greenwood Initiative has also drawn on Camber’s functional and technical expertise to support key grantees, as part of Camber’s commitment to expanding wealth-oriented approaches across the economic mobility field. Camber recently worked with the Center for Opportunity and Wealth Data – a public data platform that provides wealth data to help decision-makers advance wealth building solutions – to understand how its data products can better support economic mobility decision-making and how the platform can adapt to market changes around demand and uptake.
Impact & Outcomes
Camber’s work has given the Greenwood Initiative a clear, ambitious direction for its future investments and a strong way to articulate impact across its portfolio. Through our strategic advisory support to both the portfolio and grantees, Camber is helping the Greenwood Initiative direct resources toward opportunities that can expand economic mobility for more than 67 million Americans in the bottom half of the wealth distribution.
The work is particularly significant because the wealth mobility space is still emerging within the economic mobility field. Camber helped the Greenwood Initiative understand the current state of the field and identify the distinct areas where it is best positioned to contribute.
